Strange Diets

December 15, 2009

Here are three of the strangest diets I have read about.

  1. The Banana Diet – Comes from Japan and is very popular there.  Dieter is supposed to have a banana with warm water for breakfast. Lunch and dinner can be what ever one wants to eat.  The breakfast banana is supposed to boost the metabolism so much it allows the dieter to eat almost anything and still lose weight.
  2. The Sleeping Beauty Diet – Are you hungry or sleepy? Apparently the more you sleep the less hungry you are when you are awake.   How much sleep we get effects not only our Cortisol levels but also  the production of Leptin and Ghrelin, which trigger our appetite.   Leptin which is produced in our fat cells is what sends a signal to our brains letting us know when we are full.  Ghrelin,  from the gastrointestinal tract, stimulates appetite.  Basically, when  sleep deprived, levels of Leptin drop  and Ghrelin levels rise making one fell hungry.  Of course the opposite is also true, if getting plenty of sleep Ghrelin levels drop and Leptin levels rise making one fill satisfied and full.
  3. The Egg Diet – There are several different versions. The most popular version is a lot like the Atkins diet, basically a protein diet where the focus is on avoiding the dieters carbohydrate intake.  With almost all protein eaten on this diet coming from eggs.

If I had to choose one of these diets to try, it would be the Sleeping Beauty diet. Which diet would you choose?

I’m going with the sleeping diet also, you can’t eat while you’re sleeping and I like to sleep!
