Get Crackin’ Pistachios

November 17, 2009

I was watching this commercial and it made me stop and think, is it really the lowest calorie nut?

Here are some interesting facts I learned about Pistachios in my quest to find the truth.

  • Pistachios have more antioxidants than green tea.
  • An appetite suppressing compound called oleoylethanolamide was recently discovered in monounsaturated FAT. Fifty-five percent of the fat in pistachios is monounsaturated fat.
  • Pistachios  offer more cholesterol fighting phytosterols than any other nut..
  • Pistachios have more potassium than any other nut. One serving of pistachios has more potassium than half of a large banana?
  • The green color in pistachios comes from a compound called lutein which helps to prevent the most common form of blindness in older adults.
  • Pistachios has 3 grams of fiber, more than any other nut. I would have to eat three plums to get the same amount of fiber as in one serving of pistachios.
  • February 26th is National Pistachio Day
  • Pistachios  have the largest serving size of all nuts. One serving is about one ounce, which is 49 kernels and only 160 calories. The lowest calorie amount of all nuts and tied with cashews. The difference is it only takes 18 cashews to equal one ounce.

With all that goodness, and especially the appetite suppressing compound, I will be getting pistachios on my next trip to the grocery store. 🙂

What is an “appetite suppressing compound”? Isn’t all food a compound that suppresses your appetite? (Except Chinese food).
